Dublin Zoo was opened in 1831 with 42 mammals and 72 different bird species donated by the successful London Zoo in 1840.  The decision was made to open the zoo to the public for 1 penny per person on Sundays which helped fund the growth of the zoo.  Today the zoo is Ireland’s largest family attraction, spans over 28 hectares and attracts over 1 million visitors per year.

The zoo runs numerous events to day and night that are open to the public and all ages.

  • ‘Sunset at the Zoo’ is a special event with an evening tour and a chance to see and hear the animals at night, there is also a sumptuous meal and music included.
  • ‘Educational bird watching’ mornings with lessons from the zoo keepers and take place on the last Sunday of every month (except December).
  • ‘Wake up with the Ornagutans’ is an opportunity to see the whole family wake up before the zoo opens and is a real special treat.
  • Santa’s Grotto is open from the 26th of November 2016 and is sure to be a big hit.
