Hotel near Ardgillan Castle

Located only 20 minutes from our hotel, Ardgillan Castle & Demense is a substantive parkland overlooking the Irish Sea.

Ardgillan is commonly referred to as a castle, although in reality the building is a large townhouse with castle like architecture and embellishments. The name Argillan actually is derived from Ard Choill which means High Wood and refers to the once thick forest which surrounded the castle.

The property was the prime residence of the Taylor family, who acquired the castle in 1737. They had been close allies of Sir William Petty, who had worked on the mid-17th century “Down Survey of Ireland” and Thomas Taylor himself had even been a chief examiner during Cromwell’s campaign.

The Taylor family were part of the social elite in the area, often dining with the Cobbs of Newbridge House, the Talbots of Malahide Castle and the Hamilton’s at Hampton Hall. The Taylors continued to inhabit Ardgillan Castle up until 1962 when the last branch of the Taylor family that lived here sold the house to a German Industrialist, Heinrich Pott. The house was later sold to Fingal County Council in 1981.

Castle & Gardens

Listen to your guide as they explain the history of the castle or take a self-guided tour following the information walls that uncover the history of the castle – the choice is yours. Ardgillan has many gardens to stroll around including the walled gardens, ornamental gardens and the occasional seasonal garden depending on the time of year.

Fairy Trail

The Fairy Trail is Ardgillan’s newest addition launched in conjunction with Fingal County Council. The trail is free to walk and meanders around the woodland area of the walled gardens. A map and quiz can be collected from the castle that makes the trail fully interactive for younger members of your family.

Castle Tea Rooms

Enjoy afternoon tea in the beautiful drawing room where the Taylor family would have once dined like nobility.
